Fronthaul transport for virtualized small cells

This paper helps operators, backhaul and service providers to understand the impact of small cell virtualization on the RAN transport architecture. Whereas initial attempts to virtualize the RAN have used ‘ideal fronthaul’ based transport, SCF has embarked on the definition of a MAC/PHY split that is more amenable in terms of transport characteristics. So the document examines the fronthaul transport issues associated with supporting infrastructure realized using the SCF’s nFAPI based virtualized small cell.
